At Taylor Johnson client Lendlease, wellness is an overall philosophy that starts from the ground up. When programming the design of the 2.5-acre Southbank Park and its adjacent riverwalk — together, the two public spaces will anchor the firm’s Southbank neighborhood along the South Branch of the Chicago River — Lendlease prioritized the restoration of the riverbank to its natural habitat, bringing native flora, fauna and bird species back to the site. To add an educational component to the initiative, Lendlease partnered with the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to enlist third-year industrial design students to plan and build species-specific birdhouses for Southbank Park. The students rose to the challenge, and it wasn’t long before their innovative designs were featured in Landscape Architecture Magazine as a result of our outreach. Read the full feature here to learn more about how the birdhouses will be incorporated into Southbank Park, which is scheduled to open later this summer.
