With demand for apartments as strong as ever — analysts at the Urban Institute predict there will be five new renters for every three new homeowners between 2010 and 2030 — multifamily investors are hitting the ground running in 2016 as competition in the sector heats up. Especially attractive are secondary markets, where property values have been slower to rise. Case in point, Taylor Johnson client Waterton recently closed on a pair of acquisitions in Texas and North Carolina: Parkside at Firewheel, a 594-unit community in suburban Dallas; and Addison Park, a 426-unit community in Charlotte.
