When Taylor Johnson client Related Midwest and its partners first contemplated the design for The 78, a 62-acre live-work-play neighborhood along the South Branch of the Chicago River, connectivity was a central focus. Working in partnership with the city, the firm determined that an extension of Wells Street would weave The 78 into the downtown street grid, providing a much-needed link between the Loop and Chinatown while creating a bike- and pedestrian-friendly streetscape that would be a key anchor for the mixed-use development. So, when work began on the street, dubbed the Wells-Wentworth Connector, it signaled the first construction milestone for The 78 — and the media’s interest was piqued.
