Chicago-based integrated design and delivery firm Wight & Company has announced that it has promoted Shawn Benson to director of land development. In his new role, Benson will lead teams of civil engineers and landscape architects in the management and design of various private and public development projects from feasibility through final design, permitting and construction.

“In his seven years at Wight & Company, Shawn has provided resilient and sustainable designs for some of our most high-profile projects,” said Mark Wight, CEO at Wight & Company. “His talent with integrating site and building designs with landscape amenities to enhance neighborhoods, campuses and communities makes him ideal for this role and an asset to our leadership team.”

At Wight & Company, Benson has overseen projects for recreation/sports, education, commercial retail and municipal sector clients, including site design for a major campus addition to New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill.; a new elementary school for Sunset Ridge School District 29 in Northfield, Ill.; a new science and learning center at St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minn.; and net zero recreational facilities for both the Plainfield Park District in Plainfield, Ill., and Northbrook Park District in Northbrook, Ill.

Benson has a bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Iowa, and holds certifications in Professional Engineering, Erosion and Sediment Control, and LEED. Prior to joining Wight & Company, Benson was a project manager at CaliChi Design Group in Chicago, and a project engineer at Woolpert in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.
