As a seasoned public relations professional, Kathryn Kjarsgaard knows how to get her ducks in a row. After all, she did just that (literally!) earlier in her career as a PR account executive in the food and hospitality industry. While working on a campaign for the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Kathryn and her team flew the hotel’s famous ducks to another hotel client in Louisville, Kentucky for a weekend. The ducks stayed in a special suite and performed their legendary “march” in the lobby. The campaign was a huge success, generating substantial media interest and resulting in numerous local and regional print and TV news stories.

Kathryn continues to get her ducks in a row every day on behalf of her clients at Taylor Johnson. As a senior account manager, it’s her responsibility to create and manage the public relations programs for her assigned accounts. Her work has resulted in placements in publications such as Crain’s Chicago Business, Chicago Tribune, Builder magazine, MarketWatch and Forbes.com, as well as on NBC-TV and HGTVFrontDoor.com. Perhaps more importantly, through Kathryn’s efforts, her homebuilder clients have seen increased traffic to their sales centers.

After growing up in Tennessee and Kentucky, Kathryn graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Journalism and then earned a master’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communications from Northwestern University.

In her spare time, Kathryn spends time with her husband, Joal, and their two teenage children, whether it’s traveling or cheering on the kids at their baseball, softball or basketball games. She enjoys walking with her rescue dog, Lexi, as well as gardening, baking, and taking classes at Spenga, a combination of spin, strength and yoga.

BEYOND THE BIO

With Taylor Johnson since: 2003.

People around the office come to me for: Work-related: story ideas and TJ history. Food related: Restaurant recommendations and coffee creamer. I’m also always game for coffee and juice bar runs!

People around the office avoid me for: Telling jokes – I’m horrible at that.

Three words that describe me are: Loyal, caring and dependable.

I never thought I’d be: A “baseball mom” and a “soccer mom”! Especially not at the same time!

Favorite Chicago building: I love historic buildings and landmarks. I’ve always been drawn to the original limestone Chicago Water Tower and recently toured the Chicago Athletic Association building, which was nicely redone to maintain so much of the character but with great new features.

Last good book I read: I love my book club! A really great classic we read is East of Eden. We also read American DirtThe Great Alone and My Own Words by Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

On my playlist: 80s and 90s music, Broadway showtunes and Taylor Swift. I enjoy a wide range of channels on SiriusXM and always love listening to NPR on the radio!

My favorite apps: Audible, MyFitnessPal, Spotify, The Weather Channel and, of course, the News app.

What I like most about TJ: The firm operates like a newsroom. It’s collaborative, with everyone helping each other and sharing ideas.

Most people don’t know that I: …am from Kentucky and can make mint juleps! I love the Kentucky Wildcats and bourbon!

My guilty pleasure is: Cozying up at the end of the day with a cup of hot tea or hot chocolate, my pillow pet and throw blanket, and a good book or show on PBS, History Channel or Starz.
