Paula knew from an early age that she wanted to be a writer. As a young girl growing up on a farm in central Illinois, she had subscriptions to Highlights magazine and other children’s publications and waited anxiously for her issues to arrive every month. Even when she was older, she would read magazines and newspapers and observe how the author used his or her words – and then highlighted words she liked and crossed out ones she didn’t think made sense.

It should come as no surprise that Paula earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Illinois and began a career as a successful editor and writer. She has extensive experience covering the real estate market, having served as senior editor of Midwest Construction, editor of Midwest Real Estate News, editor of Chicago Industrial Properties and as a staff writer and freelancer for numerous publications.

Paula joined Taylor Johnson as a senior writer in 2010 and stepped into the role of senior account manager in January 2020. She has secured media placements in major publications such as the Chicago Tribune and Crain’s Chicago Business.

When she’s not working, Paula and her husband, Juan, enjoy spending time with their two young-adult children, whom Paula homeschooled, as well as visiting museums, going to the beach and spending time outdoors. She also enjoys cooking, especially Mexican cuisine.

BEYOND THE BIO

With Taylor Johnson since: 2010.

People around the office come to me for: quick turnaround on a news release.

Three words that describe me are: hardworking, diligent, sincere.

When I was growing up I thought I’d be a: a cattle rancher in Texas. I grew up on a farm downstate, and our black anguses never had much room to roam.

Favorite Chicago building: Chicago Cultural Center, for the ambiance. The coffered ceilings, dark woodwork, stained glass Tiffany dome and intricate glass mosaics make me ponder Chicago’s history and craftsmanship.

Last good book I read: Swiss Family Robinson, with the kids. I haven’t complained about pulling together a nutritious meal since reading it.

On my iPod: The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Dobie Gray, Jeremy Camp, MercyMe, Queen, Ramon Ayala, Yo-Yo Ma, soundtracks to Fiddler On the Roof and The Jersey Boys.

My favorite app: CalenGoo.

Favorite pastime: reading.

What I like most about Taylor Johnson: the mutual respect everyone has for each other. We all want to see each other succeed.

The worst job I ever had was: waitressing at a fine dining restaurant. I had my share of “dirty jobs” on the farm, but I found them easier than eloquently describing wines, remembering which ones were oaky, fruity, dry, full-bodied, etc., and which entrees they went with.

Most people don’t know that I: drove a Honda 550 motorcycle to get around in my 20s when I lived in Lakeview. Growing up, my two older brothers and I were always tearing through the yard and surrounding fields on dirt bikes.
