McHugh Construction, one of the Midwest’s largest commercial contractors, has hired Alec Miller as its general counsel. A seasoned construction attorney with more than 20 years of experience across in-house and private practice roles, Miller will lead the firm’s legal, risk management and compliance functions.
In his new role, Miller will oversee financings and transactions, regulatory compliance, labor negotiations, and litigation and dispute resolution, while partnering with project teams and leadership to proactively manage risk across McHugh’s expanding project portfolio.
“Alec brings deep experience in structuring and negotiating complex construction agreements, which will strengthen our ability to manage risk and execute projects efficiently,” said Kinjal Patel, president of McHugh Construction. “His background in working closely with executive leadership and project teams will be especially valuable as we continue to grow our work across ground-up construction, renovation and adaptive reuse.”
Miller most recently served as general counsel at Premier Design+Build Group, where he was the primary legal advisor for the national industrial construction firm. In that role, he led enterprise risk management, negotiated owner and subcontractor agreements, and developed companywide contracting protocols and training programs to help project teams identify and manage risk.
Previously, Miller was a partner at Rock Fusco & Connelly, where he specialized in construction law and advised clients on contract structuring, risk allocation and dispute avoidance.
“McHugh’s commitment to quality and collaboration aligns closely with my approach to helping teams manage risk proactively and deliver successful outcomes for clients, so this is the perfect fit for me,” said Miller. “Plus, in the field of Chicago commercial construction law, working at McHugh is the gold standard due to its legendary project roster. It’s an honor to join the company, and I look forward to working alongside McHugh’s leadership and project teams as the firm continues to grow its work in constructing complex and high-profile developments.”
Miller has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Lawrence University and a law degree from Valparaiso University. He has been recognized by Illinois Super Lawyers and is an active member of Lawyers for the Creative Arts. He also served on the board of directors for Chicago Dramatists.
