When Taylor Johnson client Fifield Cos. set out to develop NEXT, a 28-story high-rise in River North, they knew they’d be facing an uphill battle. As is the case for much of River North, Goose Island, and the West Loop, the site for NEXT sits in a Planned Manufacturing District and was zoned for low density commercial and industrial use. But Steve Fifield, president and CEO of Fifield Cos., says mixed-use development in PMDs is vital to the continued growth of Chicago’s jobs and housing markets.
