Biophilic design, a building industry concept that focuses on enhancing connectivity to the natural world, has long been incorporated in residential and commercial developments around the world. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a growing emphasis on the health and well-being of building occupants, measured through formal certification programs like the WELL Building Standard. What was once a nice-to-have feature is fast becoming a must-have, particularly in office environments, where research has shown that direct links with nature can boost productivity and, when outdoor areas are incorporated, provide much-needed space for socially distanced meetings. With several client examples to point to, Taylor Johnson took the trend to Forbes.com, connecting freelancer Jeff Steele with clients Wight & Co. and KTGY Architecture + Planning for insights on the growing popularity of biophilic elements.

Large expanses of glass curtain wall and outdoor terraces are some of the biophilic elements at the Barnes & Thornburg Building, a mixed-use development in downtown South Bend, Ind., designed by KTGY Architecture + Planning.
