Rising rents have put a strain on households across the country, making affordable housing all the more important for those whose budgets don’t align with market-rate communities.

Taylor Johnson client Evergreen Real Estate Group is among the developers filling this void by constructing new communities and preserving others at risk of losing their affordable status. The firm recently entered the Racine, Wis., market with its acquisition of Durand Plaza, a 72-unit affordable community for seniors and individuals with disabilities. In addition to planning a $2 million renovation, Evergreen is pursuing a 20-year extension of the community’s Section 8 Housing Assistance Payment contract.
