Is Rent Control Right For Chicago (Or Anywhere)?
As the workforce housing shortage persists, rent control is being considered as a possible — and controversial — solution. While Oregon recently passed a law allowing it, other similar measures have fallen short, including a bill introduced earlier this year that would have lifted Illinois’ statewide ban and given local municipalities the authority to adopt their own rent control policies. But as John Sebree, first vice president and national director of the National Multi Housing Group at Taylor Johnson client Marcus & Millichap, recently told Forbes.com, rent control legislation, while well-intended, often worsens affordability challenges.
