Achieving LEED certification can be a tall task for any apartment tower, but it’s especially challenging for existing buildings whose owners have less flexibility than ground-up developers. Just ask Taylor Johnson client Waterton Associates, whose Presidential Towers – Chicago’s largest rental community with 2,346 units – was awarded LEED EB-Silver last spring following a multi-year redevelopment. Waterton recently discussed the project with Sustainable Chicago, sharing how LEED certification for existing multifamily properties differs from other property types, and even other rental communities.
