McHugh Construction Applies Alternative Methods To Help Bridge Affordability Gap

March 11, 2021

Overcoming hurdles to get projects built is just one of the mantras of Taylor Johnson client James McHugh Construction Co. When it comes to building affordable housing in Chicago, those hurdles have been high – from rising construction costs to a challenging building code. Knowing McHugh has several high-profile affordable housing projects on Chicago’s South and West sides in various stages of development, we pitched the company as an expert source to RE Journals for a feature on construction solutions for getting affordable housing built. In this resulting article, McHugh’s Dave Bartolai and Steve Wiley explain how alternative construction methods and locating affordable housing within transit-oriented parts of the city can help lower costs while maintaining the highest quality in affordable housing development.

The affordable housing pipeline in Chicago is busy for McHugh Construction and joint venture partner Bowa Construction. The duo recently completed a commercial building as the first phase of Ogden Commons (left) and were selected to build 43 Green (right), a mixed-income, mixed-use project. Both projects are being developed by TJ client The Habitat Company.
