Vibrant living walls, an interactive display that measures building performance in near-real time, and cloud-based software that gives tenants around-the-clock control over their energy consumption are just a few of the recent additions at 200 West Madison following a $5 million renovation of the West Loop office tower. Managed and leased by Taylor Johnson client Transwestern — and also home to the firm’s Midwest headquarters — the 45-story high-rise is a case study in the growing importance of sustainability in office buildings as businesses pay closer attention to how their space impacts the environment and, increasingly, their own employees. Knowing the trend would appeal to green building publications, we pitched it to Sustainable Chicago, resulting in this cover story in the fall issue.
