Michelle Merrick will oversee all healthcare, education and municipal interior design projects for Baker Barrios nationally

Baker Barrios Architects, a leading national multidisciplinary design firm, today announced it has hired Michelle Merrick, IIDA, RID, WELL AP, as the firm’s director of institutional interiors. In this newly created role, Merrick will oversee all healthcare, education and municipal interior design projects for Baker Barrios nationally.

“We have seen strong growth in all institutional sectors and, from experience, know the interiors of these specialized spaces require a keen understanding of the various requirements, best practices and state-of-the-art technologies that apply to each property type,” said Tim Baker, co-founder and CEO of Baker Barrios Architects. “Michelle brings that knowledge as well as a demonstrated history of creative, forward-looking designs in institutional markets.”

Prior to joining Baker Barrios, Merrick served as a senior designer for Gresham Smith, focusing on the healthcare market. Her portfolio contains some of the most highly specialized spaces in healthcare, including intensive care units, surgical centers and micro-hospitals. She has also led projects in education, senior living and hospitality design.

“I’m passionate about harnessing the power of design to create high-performing environments that support well-being, enhance learning and promote comfort and dignity for all, and I’m excited to bring my skills to Baker Barrios’ impressive list of clients across the country,” said Merrick. “I see my breadth of experience as an asset given the crossover that exists among various sectors, especially the broad influence of hospitality design within the institutional markets. My true passion lies in creating spaces that meet the complex requirements of institutional facilities in a way that still centers the design on human experience.”

Some of Baker Barrios’ current projects in these sectors include the Morton Plant North Bay Hospital observation unit in New Port Richey, Fla.; Tampa General Hospital Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla.; and a new solid waste facility including office and conference space, also in Tampa.
