Mary Cook Associates Reveals Interior Photos of Two Recently Completed New Jersey Rental Communities – One with a Vintage Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite

September 17, 2021

Chicago-based Mary Cook Associates (MCA), a national, award-winning commercial interior design firm, today released images of two multifamily interiors projects it recently completed in northern New Jersey: Dey & Bergen, a 242-unit rental community in Harrison, and The Atwater, a 303-unit apartment development along the Hackensack River in Bogota.

“As a firm accustomed to working across the country, part of our successful process is to do a deep dive into each local market and help our clients use design to differentiate their projects from others in the area,” said Mary Cook, founder and president of Mary Cook Associates. “With the rising demand for new rentals throughout New Jersey, we’ve been very busy over the last several years keeping our finger on the pulse of each unique market’s nuances. While these projects have the common thread of being located in the same region of the state, we designed a one-of-a-kind aesthetic and curated distinctive features for each one based on demographic and geographic influences and target market psychographics. We’ve layered that with our deep knowledge of national multifamily trends to position our clients’ developments above the competition.”

Cook noted that in addition to Dey & Bergen and The Atwater, her firm’s current work in New Jersey includes projects underway in West Orange, Bayonne, Randolph, Old Tappan, Jersey City and Parsippany. “We have a deep network of relationships in the state thanks to our track record of successful projects and reputation for delivering high-caliber work,” said Cook. “That, paired with the strong multifamily demand in the region, has led to a full pipeline of opportunities with both new and repeat clients.”

Dey & Bergen, Harrison, N.J.
Mary Cook Associates partnered with developer BNE Real Estate Group to design the interiors at Dey & Bergen, including 45,000 square feet of amenity space featuring multiple lounge spaces, a coworking area with private offices, fitness center and yoga studio, a children’s playroom, pet spa, and outdoor space with grilling areas, firepits and a movie screen. The Mary Cook team also selected the finish package for the property’s individual units, which include one- and two-bedroom plans.

“Harrison was previously very industrial, but thanks to a local PATH station that makes for an easy commute to Manhattan, the area has a wave of new multifamily buildings targeting sophisticated renters who want that quick access and connection to the city,” said Cook. “We had to be strategic about our placement in this competitive market, and so we developed a concept that recalls Madison Avenue in the 1950s and 1960s, loosely inspired by the Mad Men television show. It’s fun, active and interesting, and also gave us a number of opportunities to create memorable design elements.”

The Mary Cook team carried the concept throughout the property’s common areas with color elements, patterns, background details and furniture styling that all give a nod to the time period. For example, the resident lounge area features high-contrast houndstooth floor tiles, walnut wood tones and clean-lined midcentury modern furnishings. One of the property’s most notable design elements is what Cook refers to as the “ultimate Instagram moment” – a speakeasy social lounge with a vintage 1960 Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite as its centerpiece.

“The speakeasy is a separate space that residents can reserve for private events, so it was perfect for doing something special and a little over the top,” said Cook. “Bringing in a vintage car was no easy feat – there were a lot of logistics, from finding the right vehicle to using a crane to lift it into the building before windows were installed – but the end result is exactly what we envisioned to create a truly one-of-a-kind amenity that stands out from anything else in the market.”

Dey & Bergen is located at 1 Bergen St. along the Passaic River waterfront. The community opened in May.

The Atwater, Bogota, N.J.
Collaborating with developer PCD Development, Mary Cook Associates designed 30,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenity and common areas at The Atwater, complementing the 303-unit property’s waterfront location along the Hackensack River. The community’s amenities include a clubroom and adjacent billiards lounge, coworking space, kids game room, fitness area, resort-style pool and deck, and firepit lounges.

“Renters often see this area as a quieter alternative to nearby – and denser – Bergen County towns, yet they still want a sophisticated, amenity-rich lifestyle,” said Cook. “That made designing the amenities with plenty of activities and options for everyone critical. We integrated function and elevated livability throughout, with a boutique vibe that has delighted residents and inspired connections and a strong sense of community.”

The Atwater, which is located at 1000 West Fort Lee Road in Bogota, was completed in early 2021.
