National Register of Historic Places apartment building marks centennial following top-to-bottom restoration and renovation by Mansueto Office
A prominent Lincoln Park landmark will reach a significant milestone this weekend as The Belden-Stratford, the iconic Beaux-Arts apartment building at 2300 N. Lincoln Park West, marks its 100th anniversary on October 1. The centennial comes in the same year the building celebrated a grand reopening following a full-scale restoration and renovation by its current ownership, Mansueto Office, which purchased the property in 2018.
Overlooking the Lincoln Park Zoo and Conservatory, The Belden-Stratford was designed by architect Meyer Fridstein and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It originally opened in 1923 as The Belden, a residential hotel. Over the decades it gradually became a traditional multifamily rental property, a process which was completed in 2012. Well known to many Chicagoans as the home of several popular eateries that have occupied its first-floor restaurant space, including Ambria, L20 and currently Mon Ami Gabi, the building is also noted for its ornate exterior architecture and interior public spaces, including a double-height lobby with gilded plaster molding and gold-leaf detailing – all of which were restored as part of the Mansueto-led renovation.
“The Belden-Stratford has been a mainstay of Lincoln Park for a century, and it was a privilege to reimagine it from top to bottom for a new generation of renters – restoring or recreating original elements whenever possible to preserve its authentic character, while also infusing the property with the lifestyle amenities and modern offerings today’s residents want,” said Ari Glass, head of real estate for Mansueto Office. “With its beautiful blend of old and new, we hope the building will continue to be relevant and have a special place in this neighborhood and this city for the next 100 years.”
Today, The Belden-Stratford comprises 209 luxury apartments, including studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom residences as well as a selection of penthouses with double-height living space. Monthly rents range from $2,500 to $15,000.
